Charity Day September 2023 - Club President Malcolm Alder-Smith

A Message from Club President Malcolm Alder-Smith

Wow – what a year as Club President

TBH, I’m quite exhausted. The last few weeks since Banstead Neville touring side to Pershore Bowls have been hectic, that period of time has involved 14 days of events/games/touring .

I’d like to say a huge thanks to Vice President Ray, Tony Monk, Peter Watt, Chris Cummings, JR and of course Joan Collins for all her help, advice guidance and support throughout the year.

I am now looking forward to a nice relaxed winter, spent with my lady.

I would like to thank everyone who helped set up and attended Presidents Charity Day on 16th September and especially those who helped run the range of stands, raising a great deal of money for my Charity.

What fun we had with the bowls, the winning rink was Rachael Oland, Mark Roberts, Philip Oland and Lesley Kemp, they then played a pairs match of Rachael & Mark v Lesley & Philip who in turn played a singles match between Lesley & Philip

The winner of the Cyril Jones Cup was Lesley and Philip getting the runners up Dave Smith Memorial Cup – well done to all

My charity raised for the day was £891 plus £1867.30 giving a total of £2758.30 for the Ellen MacArthur Trust

Here are just a few photos of the day –

Winner of Guess the Sweets was Lesley, Winner of Gorilla Bongo was Kay and Target Bowls was Roger Baker

On a sunny Sunday afternoon Shanklin Bowling Club held there annual Charity Days.

This years Charity chosen by Club President Cherie Earle was Isle of Wight Age UK.

56 Members were competing for the Cyril Johnston Cup and for the runner up the Dave Smith Memorial Cup. The eventual winner for the Cyril Johnston Cup was Bob Denton with Bob Stubbs winning the Dave Smith Memorial Cup.

A buffet lunch was prepared by Maureen & John Harden for those staying for the day.

The weather helped to make this a great day and the total money raised was £2511 for Isle of Wight Age UK.

Mark O’Sullivan the representative from Isle of Wight Age UK was overwhelmed by the amount raised by our Shanklin Bowling Club Members.

He gave a great presentation on the role of Isle of Wight UK and how much use the money raised would bring, it is one of the charities that isn’t government funded.

Club President Cherie Earle would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all their support an hard work in making this a wonderful day!

Charity day 10th September 2017 - club president raymond ridett

56 Bowlers took part in the Annual Charity Day match at Shanklin. 14 teams of 4 were competing to be the best rink over 20 ends, but unfortunately due to the continuous rain only 15 ends were played.

The winning rink consisted of Robbi Hayes, Rosemary Brooks, Mark Newland and Mitch Jones and Joan Roberts who played half each. Rosemary was unable to play any further part in the coemption, so the line up in the semi final was Robbi and Mitch against Mark and Joan. In the pouring rain and over three ends Robbi and Mitch won by 2 shots to 1.

The final therfore was between Robbi Hayes and Mitch Jones, again over three ends. Robbi scored one on the first end with Mitch replying with two shots on the second end. Robbi then levelled the scores in the final end meaning an extra end had to be played, (and still the rain kept coming, by now quite heavy). Robbi was holding two shots but with his last wood Mitch drew the shot to take the title.

Winner – Cyril Johnston Cup Mitch Jones

Runner Up – Dave Smith Mmeorial Cup Robbi Hayes
